Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world and, dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, it is the oldest in continuous occupation. It is one of the principal official residences of the British monarch and most of the kings and queens of England have influenced the construction and evolution of the castle. St. George's Chapel, the place of worship at Windsor Castle, is the final resting place of many royal notables including Henry VIII, the one with six wives, Charles I, who lost his head, and George III, who lost the American Colonies.

The road from Royal Holloway College to Windsor passes through Runnymede, a water-meadow alongside the River Thames, associated with the signing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215.
